As we all settle into our daily routines here at the college, the JACFA Executive would like to take a moment to extend a warm welcome to all of our new colleagues, and an equally warm welcome back to everyone returning from an all-too-short summer break. As we get things rolling this year, we wanted to provide a brief update on some key continuing files, as well as to give you a brief overview of some of the issues on which JACFA will be focussed in the coming months.
First General Assembly: September 26
Our first General Assembly this year will be held on Tuesday, September 26th in P-204 at 5:30PM. As usual, a light supper will be served from 5:00PM – 5:30PM (location TBA). The main item slated for discussion and possible decision is JACFA’s position on the revision of College Policy 12 on the evaluation of teaching, an important issue that affects all teachers. We will be sending you more consultation material as the GA date approaches. Please be on the lookout for future mailings on this file.
College Posts Plan for Temporary Replacement Spaces (I.e. for the Faculty Lounge)
Since last May, we have been in contact with the College regarding the availability of substitute space for the Faculty Lounge during Library renovations. In response, the college recently posted a list of available spaces, and procedures for booking them on Omnivox (click here). Given the limited space available, we advise everyone to anticipate their space needs and make their bookings as early as possible. Please let us know if you run into any issues booking any of the spaces listed.
With ongoing college renovations, we have been monitoring for potential health and safety issues, and have been in touch with the College and affected departments to ensure proper communication. We are pleased to report that thus far this term, no major health or safety concerns have arisen. As construction is ongoing, we ask everyone to be vigilant, and to report any health and safety issues to the Facilities Department (please cc. JACFA), including the presence of construction dust and/or fumes in areas accessible to faculty/staff/students, exposed electrical wiring, unsafe placement of construction materials and/or equipment, etc.
The New JACFA Website is Live
We are pleased to announce that the new JACFA website, http://www.jacfa.ca is now live and ready for use. The new website provides a simplified interface and a search function to make it easier for members to find the information they need, when they need it. Additionally, the new site features a calendar of JACFA events (such as general assembly’s and social events), as well as other dates important to our working lives (such as grade submission deadlines).
A Look Ahead
Aside from the Policy 12 revision, here are some files we will be working on this term:
- The conclusion of a local entente on the composition of a joint (Continuing Education and Day Division) hiring committee,
- The development of a protocol with the College for the allocation of S024 resources,
- Exploring the possibility of creating a general offer of service (G.O.S.), allowing non-permanent teachers to apply for their jobs only once per year.
Solidarity with Support Workers at Collège Stanislas
In closing, we invite you to support our fellow CSN union at Collège Stanislas by signing their petition. They are seeking to get their employer to reverse their decision to contract out and lay off more than 30 unionized support staff jobs. For more information and access to the petition, click here.
If you have any questions about these issues, please do not hesitate to contact the JACFA office. In Solidarity,
The JACFA Executive
